Choose a location with a balance of sunlight and shade, avoiding areas with excessive tree cover to prevent debris from falling into the water. Consider the overall landscape design and ensure easy access for maintenance tasks when selecting the ideal spot for your water feature.
Essential equipment includes a reliable water pump to circulate and aerate the water, and a quality filter to remove debris and impurities. Choose a pump with the appropriate flow rate for your feature’s size, and ensure the filter is suitable for the type and volume of your water feature to maintain a healthy aquatic environment. Items like a UV light will help keep water clear and chlorine dispensers can be used in water features without plant and aquatic life.
A general rule of thumb for the Pacific Northwest is to leave water features running and to drain and cover fountains. Water features, especially in ground ones, are unlikely to freeze to the point of doing damage while above-ground fountains are more at risk. If you drain your water feature make sure to drain all filters and plumbing lines and if possible remove the pump and store it indoors. The addition of small heaters and/or air stones can help prevent the water surface from freezing over completely.
LED underwater lights or spotlights strategically placed around the water feature can create a stunning visual effect at night. Choose warm-toned lights to enhance the ambiance and showcase the water’s movement and reflections.
A pond depth of at least 2 feet is recommended to provide adequate space and insulation for fish during varying weather conditions. Deeper areas, around 3 to 4 feet, offer refuge from predators and temperature fluctuations.
Ideal plants for water gardens in the Pacific Northwest include water lilies and water hawthorn. Marginal plants like cattails and irises thrive along the edges, providing a balanced ecosystem while enhancing the visual appeal of your water feature.
